Work Domain Analysis for Ecological Interface Design to Prevent Ship Collision
نویسنده
چکیده
Anti-collision at sea is technically difficult to realize as it involves the complex interaction between human navigators, ships and surrounding topographical environment. Collision avoidance should be conducted by human navigators. This paper proposes a way to graphically present relevant information for collision avoidance to help the human navigators’ decision making. The display can provide accurate situation awareness and reduce cognitive workload. This paper provided an abstraction hierarchy model for collision avoidance and several design tips for ecological interface design to support navigator who are confronted with ship collision situation.

Ecological Interface Design in Aviation Domains: Work Domain Analysis of Automated Collision Detection and Avoidance
This paper describes Work Domain Analysis (WDA) applied to the domain of automated midair collision detection and avoidance as a first step in the design of improved ecological interfaces for automated traffic alerting displays. Three abstraction hierarchies (AH) modelling the aircraft, collision environment, and a traffic alerting system are presented, and the challenges of adapting the AH to ...
متن کاملExtending Ecological Interface Design principles: A manufacturing case study
Identifying information requirements is a well-understood activity, but the practice of converting data into visual form based on these requirements is less defined. The Ecological Interface Design (EID) framework attempts to bridge this design gap by offering a set of visual design principles. While these principles supply high-level goals to be achieved by the display, they do not describe th...
متن کاملBridging the Gap between Cognitive Work Analysis and Ecological Interface Design
The Cognitive Work Analysis and Ecological Interface Design frameworks have garnered a great deal of attention in recent years. The former is used to analyze a complex work domain to identify the behaviorshaping constraints imposed by the work domain, control tasks, strategies, operator competencies, and socio-organizational factors. The latter informs the design of operator interfaces for comp...
متن کاملWork domain analysis and ecological interface for the vehicle routing problem
In this paper, we propose a work domain analysis for the vehicle routing problem. This analysis facilitates the identification of the problem constraints. The analysis is done through an abstraction hierarchy which facilitates an ecological user-interface design. The proposed decision support system and the ecological interfaces are presented. Finally, we propose an experimental study in order ...
متن کاملShip Collision Avoidance by Distributed Tabu Search
More than 90% of world trade is transported by sea. The size and speed of ships is rapidly increasing in order to boost economic efficiency. If ships collide, the damage and cost can be astronomical. It is very difficult for officers to ascertain routes that will avoid collisions, especially when multiple ships travel the same waters. There are several ways to prevent ship colli...
